Keep Calm and Love Your Curves

Artesands is a curvy girl swimwear brand that was borne of a passion, determination and commitment to normalise perceptions of the female body. And these are not just words; As a team, we work incredibly hard to break down stereotypical swimwear industry ideals of how women are supposed to look.

Our curve fit swimwear is crafted to the highest standards by skilled artisans to enhance the beauty of women’s bodies and to fit all our varying curves. Throughout the design process, each piece is styled and sculpted with outstanding bust support, secure contouring and luxurious fabrics to create on-trend women’s plus size swimwear that stands the test of time and makes you feel beautiful.

The Artesands team is committed to two main objectives:

  • Producing beautiful, fashionable swimwear that fits perfectly and is well made.
  • Promoting ‘body positivity’ so our Artesands curvy babes feel confident and comfortable in our swimwear.

Our brand name, Artesands, is derived from sand (the beach) and artisans (skilled workmanship). Our philosophy is to enhance where desired and support where required, because, as with all bodies, there are some areas we like to give more support and control and other areas we like to show off. Our brand mission is to have every woman feeling confident and comfortable in her own skin when in the sun and around water. To achieve this, we put enormous thought and effort into designing plus size swimsuits that have great fit and the best support where needed.

We also fit our curve fit swimwear on real curvy bodies. We understand that a size 18 is different to a size 10 which is why we fit on an US 14 / AUST 18 body. We grade our plus size bathing suits based on these measurements to give you the best fitting curvy beach swimwear that enhances your curves in all the right places.

Of course, we use some of the finest, most luxurious fabrics for our ranges – because there’s no point wearing a gorgeous swimsuit that feels uncomfortable against your skin. Our main outer fabric has a soft, silk-like feel that beautifully displays our wonderful prints, while our other specialized fabric is our 360-degree internal powermesh. Our powermesh is what gives you supreme, yet comfy tummy control that holds you in without digging into you. It sculpts your body and smooths your curves for ultimate body confidence.

We understand that every woman’s body is uniquely different and beautiful in its own way, and that’s why we design pieces that are suited to all body shapes and sizes.

As our vision is to help curvy girls to love their bodies, we thought it was time to put aside all the messages and quotes, the cliches and mantras – and just take a long, hard, deeply honest look at what we really feel about the skin we’re in, and how we can best serve ourselves to be able to live body-confident and self-loving lives. I know that may sound like a lot, but we’re here to break it down.

Here’s the thing, as much as social media likes to espouse the idea of embracing body positivity, no matter your shape or size, and as much as we might tell ourselves we’re beautiful no matter what, it’s not a message that everyone is able to internalise.

Sometimes, some days, some weeks, some months and some years – we just can’t get there. We look at ourselves and we quite simply don’t like what we see. It can be a dark place for some and unless you’ve been blessed with an innate sense of self-love and self-confidence and you’ve always been okay with your body, it can be a real struggle.

The term ‘body positivity’ has become so embedded in mainstream culture as a way to promote acceptance of what we look like, but it’s obvious lean seems to be towards a greater acceptance of curvy bodies, in particular. Why do we need to be taught to embrace our curves? Why is loving curves seemingly more difficult than loving skinny? ‘Curvy’ doesn’t have to mean fat. ‘Curvy’ can be fit and vital and is most definitely sexy. ‘Curvy’ can simply be the shape of your frame, your innate body structure. It’s such a shame that the words ‘fat’ and ‘thin’ still come into discussions about body shape when the human figure is never that black and white.

Fortunately, times and trends have seriously begun to change - and where once a thigh gap was once considered the ultimate in sexy, big butts and large breasts are now the desire of women (and men) all around the world. We only need look at the bodies of the likes of Kim Kardashian, Salma Hayek, Nigella Lawson and Kat Dennings – some of the most famous women in the world – to see that curvaceous bodies are not only sexy as hell, but aspired to by many as well! These women own their curves wholeheartedly and flaunt them for the world to see. They appear to love the shape of their bodies!

Okay, so we may not all have hourglass curves and firm bosoms, but we still have the right to own our shape and to flaunt it if that’s what we choose to do. Sexiness is more than just the way you look. It’s in the way you move, the way you hold your head and the display of “I don’t give a damn what you think of me” confidence of the person whose curvy attributes make THEM feel sexy!

Maybe the problem for those of us who still struggle with body positivity is that we’re aiming to love our bodies in their entirety, every single day. When this isn’t the case, we feel we’ve failed and we give up.

No matter how you feel about your curves, remember that curvy is a body type, not a person type and you are more than your body! While your boobs, hips, thighs and butt might be curvy, you’re still you! You have a personality separate from your appearance. Your body deserves to be embraced and looked-after, but you are not defined by your body.

Unfortunately, those words are easy to type but perhaps not so easy to believe. Life has a way of throwing things in our path that can make us feel inadequate, insecure or unattractive. PMS, breakups, social media, health problems…On those days we may look in the mirror and see a distorted version of ourselves and nothing feels good enough.

But what if you could stop that? What if you could turn to your inner critical voice and simply tell it to STFU?

Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme, but you will feel so much better if you stop beating yourself up and figure out the kindest, most loving thing you can tell yourself in those moments. Go with things you’d say to your closest friend if she needed cheering up. Do whatever works for you to help build yourself up instead of tearing yourself down.

Saying that, at Artesands we appreciate all body shapes and forms, but it is our focus and our mission (we live and breathe it) to design swimwear specifically for curvier women. We really are ALL ABOUT THE CURVE and we genuinely appreciate the female form in all its glory. Vitality is for every shape and size! Vitality is sexy and proud!

In a nutshell, our mission and our passion is to design and make beautiful looking and beautifully made swimwear that enhances the shape of curvy women – all different types of curvy women and we do our best to help you show off your curves while providing support where you need it – whether that’s supporting your boobs, accentuating your hips, lifting your butt or holding your tummy – we do it all.

We WANT you to look in the mirror and like what you see – and while we can’t change your self-talk and self-esteem overnight, we offer a brand that is 110% behind the design of perfectly fitting swimsuits for your curves, that we hope will make you feel gorgeous.

Artesands is truly a brand with a difference. Our plus size swimwear is fitted on ‘true to size’ curvy women – not fashion models – and you’ll notice this difference when you see different shaped curvy women wearing our styles. Our vision is to help all women to love their bodies and feel comfortable in their own skin.

It’s not about what size you wear – It’s about how you wear your size

And we want you to feel amazing in your Artesands swimwear, so getting the size and style that’s just right for you is so important. As such we’ve created our own guide to find the perfect curve hugging swimsuit for your body.

Our Artesands Curve Kit is based on real curvy bodies. We understand that a size 18 is different to a size 10, and so we base our sizes on US 14 / AUST 18 body shapes. We grade all our swimwear off these measurements to give you the best fitting swimsuits that enhance your curves in all the right places.

Deciding what size

At Artesands we understand that every woman’s body is uniquely different and that we all don’t fit into a standard body size mould. We all have curves but not all our curves are in the same places, so it’s really important to know our own individual bodies and take our measurements correctly to find the perfect curve fit or plus size swimsuit for our unique and individual curvy bodies. In our size guide we have easily outlined which styles best suit each unique body shape. We hope this helps when choosing your new curve fit swimwear!

Finally, we want to offer up a few tips to remind yourself every day how beautiful you are – so here goes:

3 Body Confidence Tips:

1. Spend more time in front of the mirror

Most women who aren’t comfortable with their bodies spend as little time as possible staring at their reflection in the mirror, but there is enough psychological evidence out there now telling us that the positive impact of seeing yourself naked more often, is quite remarkable. Apparently seeing yourself in the nude on the regular can change your perception of your body significantly. If you’re not yet ready to stand around in all your naked glory, try on your new swimsuit and spend some time admiring the way it wraps around your curves. Gradually, you’ll start to feel more and more comfortable less covered up – and you may even become an at-home nudist!

2. Give yourself a reality check

All those celebs and wannabe stars you see on social media – well most of them have teams of people behind them who ensure they look perfectly perfect in every image. Hair, makeup, lighting, editing and angles are meticulously curated to achieve the end result that looks unreal (because it usually is) and leaves you feeling less than thrilled about your own imperfect reflection. Trust us, those people don’t look that good in real life! Aspire less to be that unrealistic version of beauty we see in the media and more to be the best version of yourself.

3. Change your inner dialogue

As we’ve said time and time again, this is the big one…self-talk! No, you’re not crazy if you talk to yourself. We all do it – some out loud and some in our heads – but either way, this can be a form of self-harm when it’s constantly negative. Try to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Tell yourself how proud you are that your body can do all the things it does, whether you’ve birthed a human, run a race, or just used your strong arms to cook up something delicious – find ways to thank your body for being strong enough to help you to do all the things you want to do every day.

And if you still can’t quite convince yourself that you are beautiful not matter what – well then I guess you’ll just have to fake it ‘til you make it!   Be confident. Be grateful. Be Brave. Be Kind. Be loving. Be your own best friend. We guarantee you’ll be glad you did x
