Swim Dress

Swim Dress

A swim dress, by our terminology is a dress you can swim in—not just any old dress that you jump in the water in. Swim dresses are a much loved part of our curve fit swimwear repertoire and there are a few factors that we think make a great fitting plus size swim dress. Read this blog to find out more!

Swim Dress to Impress

At Artesands, we're a bunch of passionate girls who live to have fun. We love the sun, water, and anything in between—and of course all things swimwear-related.

Our days in the office aren't like your average workday: we spend most of our time talking and laughing with each other, eating snacks, laughing some more, and designing products that empower women to feel confident as they enjoy their curvy beach bodies this summer.

It's our mission to normalize the human body.

When we're not designing swimwear, we're talking about it. We don't take ourselves too seriously and we love to laugh—and if you think that's just a myth, you haven't been to an Artesands office party.

We're passionate about everything from sun to water to anything in between, and of course anything swimwear related. Our days at the office aren't like other people's office days—instead, we spend our time talking, laughing (a lot), eating (you'd be surprised how much food can be consumed in one day), and then designing and working on making sure we have the perfect product for all you girls to feel confident in your curvy beach body this summer. It's our ongoing mission to make as many women as possible feel empowered enough to enjoy the summer.

It’s our quest to normalise the human body

We were all super inspired by the mountains of swimwear around us, and that's when we started to have a really great conversation about swimdresses.

Now, for the record, none of us are swimdress wearing girls. But there we were, surrounded by all those beautiful swimsuits, and we kept getting caught in the loop and coming back to where we left off in the swimdress discussion.

The conversation started by referencing people we knew who wore swimdresses, and what style of swimdress they wore. We joked about our nana's and their swimdress-wearing days (back when it was more acceptable), and really discussed how far the swimdress has come—it's time to get those visual images of nana out of your head in her old 1970s swimdress!

It was then, while we were being super inspired, that we started having a great conversation about swimdresses.

Now mind you, this is not a topic that we regularly discuss because none of us are swimdress-wearing girls. But here we were surrounded by mountains of swimwear and couldn't help but keep coming back to the subject of swimdresses.

The conversation started with references to people we knew who wore swimdresses and what style of swimdress they wore. We joked about our grandmothers' and their swimming days—and really discussed how far the swimdress has come—and it really is time to get those visual images of grandma out of your head in her old 1970s swimsuit!

Swimdresses and what makes a great plus size swim dress

Swimdresses and what makes a great curvy and plus size swim dress.

We were analysing each of the styles what we liked and what we didn’t like, what had potential and what we could develop further.  As we were pulling out a new reference shape to pack away, we would analyse each style, with pros, cons and what we loved about it – we got really fast at doing this, but we ended up pretty much comparing every new, every original and every half developed swim dress shape back to our already fabulous best selling style Delacroix.  We didn’t find one reference sample, or one future development sample that even compared to the ease and wearability of our already established style Delacroix. It was a really positive conversation.

So, in this blog I thought I’d share a lot of the ideas we were throwing around on packing day and jot down a few of the notes I took. But I also thought what a great idea to throw it out to you guys to join in on the research of ideas and have your thoughts on what makes a fabulous totally wearable swim dress? What makes a good curvy girls swim dress? Below are our pointers and notes

So, what makes a great curvy girl swimdress?

It's not just any old dress that you jump in the water in. That's for sure!

A swim dress, by our terminology is a dress you can swim in—not just any old dress that you jump in the water in.

So, here are some things to look for when shopping:

  • - If you have ever done this as well, you will well know that normal dresses CAN NOT be a swimsuit. Nothing is more embarrassing than the jelly fish look and having your dress skirt up around your neck and trying to swim like this is not an option.
  • - A really great curvy and plus size swim dress shape will have a built-in bra so that your girls don't fall out of the top of your suit when you're splashing around or swimming laps at the pool. It should also be cut low enough on the chest so that it doesn't ride up when you're doing back flips off of diving boards (this is key!).

factors that make a great fitting plus size swimdress

1.     Confidence

Confidence, Confidence, Confidence

It’s our number one priority to make sure that your plus size swimsuit makes you feel confident and empowered. We believe that all women should love their bodies and be able to enjoy the summer, so this is always on our list of defining factors.

2.     Modesty

Modesty is a great factor to consider when choosing plus size swimwear.

Modest swimwear provides more coverage than the average one-piece swimsuit, and we all know that girls who choose to wear plus size swimdresses aren't looking to run around in bikinis.

3.     Waist defining

Waist definition is the quintessential body shape that we all love, and it's easy to create through a classic A-line skirt. This style of skirt skims your hips and gives you a beautiful shape, but it doesn't cling to your body like many other styles. It's an excellent example of waist defining.

If you want to show off your curves, there's no better way than through waist definition. The quintessential body shape that we all love is an hourglass, and what better way to create this then through waist definition. A-line skirts that don't cling to your body and just skim your hips give you a beautiful shape and are a perfect example of waist defining.

4.     Bust enhancing

Bust enhancement is not just bust support! Why not promote our best feature, and the enhancement of the bust truly does help create the perfect hourglass shape.

5.     One piece

The perfect plus size swimsuit is a one piece, and it's not just a piece of nylon/elastane that you pull over your existing swimsuit. If you don't believe me, refer back to my earlier comment about jelly fish school swimming.

6.     Built in Bust support

We've built bust support into our swim dress—of course! No one wants their boobs to hang around their waist while they're swimming.

Ladies, this is a no-brainer. We all know that swimsuits are not fun to wear when your boobs are bouncing around everywhere, so we've decided to make sure you have the support you need.

7.     Doesn’t jelly fish Jelly fish is a problem.

If you've ever sat in a spa and had your swimsuit climb up around you, then you know what I'm talking about. And no matter how hard you try, it's impossible to push it down or sit on it. That's why the swim dress skirt needs to be either fitted or long enough that can be sat on or held down easily.

8.     A Swim Pant

Swim Pant

A swim pant is the perfect addition to a swimdress. It has all the benefits of one piece factor, while also providing briefs.

9.     Extra sun protection

I’m a little bit iffy on this idea, sorry work colleague that suggested this! For me if a swimsuit doesn’t cover your shoulders, upper arms and mainly your decolletage (the areas that age the most from the sun) then it shouldn’t really be consider more sun protection.

10.  Full coverage bottom area

Yes, more coverage over our booty’s and a lower leg line is preferred. We aren’t wearing a swim dress to be skimpy.

11.   To look cute or elegant

Well, that’s everyone’s aim isn’t it!

12.  Colour and Print design

Don't fear the texture!

Not all prints look great in a swim dress, and heavy texture fabrics should be avoided in plus size swimdresses. There is a lot of fabric that goes into the construction of a swimdress, and the extra bulk of texture will really weigh it down—and it will become heavy in the water.

The right fabric can make or break your swim dress

A heavy texture fabric will weigh down your swimdress and make it feel like it's dragging you down in the water. And not every print looks great on a swimdress. Some prints might be too bold or busy for the occasion, so keep that in mind when choosing what to wear on your next beach trip!

Not every print looks great in a swimdress.

In fact, some prints will just look like you're wearing a bathrobe.

So if you're looking for the perfect swimdress, keep the fabrics light and airy.
